Features: A large, Ironwood deck with hot tub, Barbecue patio and lots of room for friends!

This is the deck if you are going to have lots of friends over for dinner, and that is exactly what Brent and Tracy Poole had us build this one for. They entertain a lot, and when they do it is not usually just one or two people either. There is room on this deck for all their friends, their friend’s families plus anyone else who drops by.

The design was a challenge with all the different levels and angles, but a joy to see built. The Ironwood decking is one of my favorites and will serve them well for many years. And with the hot tub, BBQ area and lots of chairs it will be hard to get their guests to go home.

Features: Master Bath Remodel with walk in shower, double sink vanity, skylights and a view!

The Pooles hired us to make a cluttered closet, tiny bath and back entry into this inviting Master Bath Suite. The plans included a large double sink and vanity, new cabinetry as you enter, a walk in shower and tub beyond.

As you can tell by the lack of coverings for the windows there are no immediate neighbors! What this bath lacks in privacy it more than makes up for in the views of the gardens and harbor beyond.

“Stewart Custom Homes has done two major projects for us. We can’t say enough about the integrity of Bob and his team and the quality of their work. We’d highly recommend this team to anyone considering having a home remodel done.” Brent Poole

I met Jane and Barney Gill through a mutual friend right about the time they were getting ready to buy land on the Island. They were looking for a builder and it was clear to us all from the start that we had a good match.

The house they wanted to build was a one story, open plan with a small loft above. The house was derived from a straw bale home designed for California. With a little tweaking it fit right in with our Northwest landscape.

It was a joy to build for them and I love the way the house turned out. See if you agree.

I came across this article and thought I would share it. It gives straight forward steps we can all take to make our homes more efficient and save ourselves some money. It is easy to get paralyzed by all the information out there on going green. This article will help to motivate us all to take the baby steps towards energy responsibility.

As anyone who has read any of my posts can deduce, I am a bit of a cynic. Not over the top, but I expect that the world operates in a downword spiral. If it’s bad today, it will probably get worse tomorrow.

This doesn’t mean I am completely hopeless. I’m not. I actually think of myself as an optimist. I just don’t think most people view the world the same way I do.

I was thrilled, then to watch the Inauguration today. Not because of the speeches or the music or the prayers. It was the look on the faces of the people in the crowd that got me.

I was raised just outside DC and there is no lack of cynicism or self interest in that part of the world. I went to school with senators kids and had lawyers and politicians as family friends and neighbors. Practical people all, not given to sentiment or hope.

To see all those people on the mall actually sensing change, to me, was foriegn. Foriegn, but beautiful. Maybe I will have to be a bit less cynical myself.

Every time I open any publication on building these days I read about the newest Green product or service. It seems that everyone is jumping on the band wagon. Don’t get me wrong. I am a strong advocate of the movement to more sustainable building practices, but the huge numbers of builders and manufacturers claiming the mantle of Green made me curious about some of the promises made.

I read about 10 different magazines and online newsletters a month devoted to my trade. I try to keep up. It is getting more and more difficult to discern fact from fiction until I came across an article in EcoHome’s online publication. It is an honest look at how parts of the industry have overstated their products or services “greeness”. The article goes on to show how these inflated claims can hurt all of us trying to go Green in the market place. For more on the subject read the article.

We built this home on a Vashon Island lot which we initially purchased to build a spec house on. Before we found the right design, I was approached by Barb Henderson to build a custom home.

The lot was the ideal setting for her. She wanted a small, practical home with the feel of a craftsman-style space.

She hired Jon Thomas, an Island architect, to design a two bedroom, one bath house that fit perfectly on the lot. Although the house is small, the high ceilings and tall windows give it a much larger feel.

Location: Vashon Island

Features: Three bedrooms, two baths, plus a garage conversion to family room. Bamboo flooring and fir trim throughout the house.

In 1997, Lisa and Greg Elliott hired us to remodel their 1970’s house to accommodate their growing family. Following architectural drawings, we turned the house from a crowded warren of rooms to an open and inviting home.

We transformed the large garage into a light and airy family room. The living room and dining area were coordinated to give the common areas a “Great Room” feel. We finished their remodel just in time: Lisa gave birth to Isabella a few months after we completed the work.

When Wendra Lynne first called me to remodel and add onto her home, her idea was to go up. But after consulting with an architect and engineer, it was decided to expand outward. Wendra wanted an open and inviting space for her Yoga clients downstairs, with a master suite and office space above.

This project was a great deal of fun. Wendra is one of those creative and spontaneous artists who are not afraid to think outside the box. While this type of project can cause a builder to pull out his hair, the challenge of making a client’s vision real made this project a great deal of fun.
